High Level Strategy and Team Working: Defining Your Goals

Discover how to define a high level strategy using Goalscape: enhance clarity and understanding to boost engagement in team working.

Introduction: High Level Strategy Definition

OK Goal-setters, here's a straightforward process for defining a high-level strategic plan to achieve your ambitious goals. We'll utilize Goalscape to visually represent your goal structure, priorities, and progress. While the example I'll use is from top-level sports, the principles apply to any ambitious undertaking. The basic process (the first 3 steps here) is not my idea, it's one I learned from Bill Sweetenham, a respected Australian coach and mentor. You can implement this process for solo projects, or for team working, ensuring everyone is aligned on goals, priorities, and the plan for success.

Implementation Process

  1. Define your next major goal Craft a concise, inspirational statement for your goal and enter this as the central goal in your new Goalscape project.
  2. Take some time to define the "essential ingredients" for your main goal Think deeply about the "essential ingredients" or subgoals that are crucial for achieving your main goal. These should be directly related to your performance and you should have between 5 and 7. Examples from sports could be physical skills, mental skills, knowledge, team relationships, equipment optimization, and physical conditioning. These essentials will be the first-level subgoals surrounding your main goal in Goalscape.
  3. Ask yourself the following questions: a) What are the true costs of these essentials? Consider factors like money, time, external help, and sacrifices in other areas of your life. b) Are these essentials entirely within your control? If not, revisit step 2 and redefine them. c) Are you genuinely willing to "pay for" these essentials? If not, reconsider your main goal in step 1 and try again.
  4. Develop Your Goal Structure Start defining subgoals for each essential. Feel free to add as many subgoals and levels as you need, but limit the number of essentials directly linked to your main goal to a maximum of nine. Exceeding seven can lead to a loss of focus, direction, and productivity.
  5. Prioritize Assign relative importance to your essentials and their subgoals. This reflects how much each goal contributes to its higher-level goal. Goalscape simplifies this process – just click on a goal and adjust its size visually!
  6. Adapt and Refine As you progress, you might refine your essentials and restructure subgoals. Strive for simplicity so your overview is clear: from a glance at the main goal and its surrounding levels you can see where you are, and what you need to do next. A good plan will feel right and provide clarity of direction and purpose.****

Avoid the temptation to clutter your master strategy plan with operational details like logistics. You can supplement your high level strategy goalscape with other software tools for budgeting, task management, etc. Use Goalscape to concentrate on your performance, in the moment, in your competitive environment. Combat complexity by using Goalscape's view options: Center On any subgoal area, or collapse levels to hide the detail in outer goals. Use the Notes field in each goal to capture crucial information, and attach files, images, videos. You can also assign people as responsible for specific goals or goal areas, use color-coding and add context-based tags to associate goals. Goalscape excels at collaboration. Import your high-level strategy, share it with your team, and use Comments with email notifications for goal-oriented communication. Most important of all, a shared, agreed-upon goal ensures true engagement and strong team bonding. By establishing a clear goal structure and problem definition, you can avoid the frustration of endless debates and foster a focused, helpful and productive team environment. Mark progress on outer subgoals, see the shading advance across your goal map and always celebrate your wins along the way.

Conclusion

Remember, problem definition is often simple but frequently overlooked. Goalscape streamlines this crucial step, paving the way for effective team working and successful strategy execution.
